Hello
If you’re reading this then you’ve come back for my second newsletter. Hello and thank you! I very foolishly launched this newsletter right before going on a big holiday and so that is why there has been a bit of a gap between my posts. Going forwards I shall plan better…
Swiss Castles
On the plus side, you now get to hear all about my holiday like an insufferable friend. I took an extended trip to Switzerland, which has to be the most beautiful country I have yet had the privilege to visit. And, being a history buff, what else could I do but tour a load of their castles whilst I was there? If you are a castle fan, then Switzerland is the country for you. Their castles are so classically medieval, with lovely stonework and pretty turrets, and often they are in fabulous locations. In total I visited 4 castles: Chillon, Gruyère, Oberhofen, Thun. Each had their own character and style, some were filled with furniture and had been updated across the centuries, whilst others were shells speaking of a different past. But Switzerland is a very accessible country for an English speaker, and most of these sites had plenty of information I could dig my teeth into! Find a picture of each castle below and choose which one you would most like to visit…
Chillon, complete with tourists waiting for the Instagrammable lakeside shot
Gruyère Castle as seen from its ramparts
Oberhofen as seen from the end of the pier
And finally Thun Castle looming over its town

In case you missed it, I recently had author Louise Wyatt as a guest writer on the blog. Her next book about Edward I’s granddaughters is out tomorrow, and so she wrote for us about a man who appears in the book, a knight called Edward Montagu. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what kind of a man he was…

And to round off the newsletter, I’d love to test a feature - a poll! Facebook removed the ability to make polls on pages a long time ago (which was a very frustrating block to interacting with you all) and so this newsletter will be a better chance to hear from you directly. I have a blog post in reserve which will be going up this weekend, but I’d love your thoughts on what you want me to write about next! I’ll keep it thematic this time - just click below.
As always, thank you for reading, and until next time.
